We all know the intestinal twist when we sense a piece of unpleasant news about to drop from someone’s lips: I'm not who you think I am; I slept with someone; I don’t love you anymore; your mother is dead; it was me, all along. In real life, this gut-plunge is accompanied by a swarm of contextual factors that are often difficult to discern, in the midst of stress, but in storytelling, we can skillfully craft these moments of conversational revelation to heighten the suspense, mystery, or trauma. In this seminar we will explore the art of ratcheting tension through dialogue, body language, and scenic mood, lessons that will be applicable to all styles and genres.
