Each year, Lighthouse awards fellowships, residencies, and prizes that honor the work our instructors and members do throughout the community. Though monetary awards are modest, we strive to recognize the successes of all of our members through the programs below.
Lighthouse fellowships help people with limited financial resources and exceptional talent join our workshops and advance their writing in four main areas. We offer fellowships for veterans, writers of color, Lit Fest, and the Book Project.
Lit Fest Fellowships
The Lit Fest Fellowships for Emerging Writers support advanced writers who haven’t yet published a book-length work and who wouldn’t otherwise be able to attend a weeklong or weekend Advanced Workshop. The Larrk Lit Fest Fellowship covers the full cost of tuition for an advanced weeklong or weekend workshop for a writer with a physical disability who wouldn’t otherwise be able to attend an advanced workshop. Applications for Lit Fest 2024 close on March 9.
Writing in Color Fellowship
Offered annually to a person who demonstrates a passion and skill for writing, a commitment to developing their writing skills, and a clear commitment to community service, the Writing In Color Fellowship for Emerging Writers is for writers who would benefit from a year's worth of involvement at Lighthouse but who would not be able to do so without financial support. In order to support the skills and creative passion of emerging writers in the Lighthouse community, this fellowship is intended for emerging writers of color who have not had significant access to or experience with traditional opportunities to learn and grow in the literary world. Any writer of color residing in the United States over the age of 18 writing in any genre who has not published a full-length manuscript is eligible to apply.
New Voices Fellowship
The New Voices Fellowship was created to support the writing journey of individuals who participate in the Hard Times program.
The Beacon Award
The Lighthouse Beacon Award was initiated by students to honor a Lighthouse faculty member for teaching excellence, commitment to students, and dedication to the craft of writing.
