Family makes and unmakes us, nurtures and wounds us. Parents, spouses, and children, grandparents, aunts, and uncles (even adored creatures) spark the work of memoir and offer abundant fodder for fiction. What are the rules of engagement for capturing our beloveds, our tormentors, on the page? What do we learn of ourselves, writing of these intimate others? In this four-week course, we'll read pieces and excerpts—nonfiction, fiction, poetry—that take on family, then dive into our own work with in-class exercises. Whether embarking on a new project, working on an existing one or craving craft work in community, writers of all levels are welcome.
