Characters operate, generally, within communities. Like us, they are part of something that came before them and that will probably continue long after their passing. A something with its own memory, pride, anger, grief; its own rules, values, beliefs. A something that can lift your characters up or put excruciating pressure on them. Community.
In this seminar, we’ll look at some writers who place the communities of their stories front and center. How do they efficiently and lyrically evoke these communities? What does this do for the story? How does it position the characters and their dilemmas? Then, we’ll reflect on and figure out ways to evoke the communities of our own stories. Bring a draft of a story or novel opening that you’d like to work on.
This class is part of the Writing in Color Fest and is open to writers of all genres and creatives who identify as Black, Indigenous, or People of Color (BIPOC+). The goal of the Fest is to provide a space for writers of color to be in community and thrive as they grow their writing skills.
