Lit Fest 2025 Visiting Author Feature: Tony Tulathimutte

Tony Tulathimutte is the author of Private Citizens and Rejection. A graduate of Stanford University and the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, he’s received a Whiting Award and an O. Henry Award, was longlisted for the National Book Award, and has written for The Paris Review, N+1, Playboy, The New York Times, The New Republic, and others. He also runs CRIT, a writing class in Brooklyn.

What are you working/currently trying to work on these days?

A stupid novel!

What’s your workshop style, and what can people expect at Lit Fest?

I run a pretty standard workshop with what I consider a rigorous amount of feedback. I think prescriptive feedback is fine as long as it's understood as spitballing rather than marching orders.

If you could only bring three books with you on a deserted island, which ones would you choose, and why?

1. How to Escape a Desert Island
2. How to Cope with Failing to Escape a Desert Island
3. The Norton Anthology of Porn

What’s one artist or writer more people should know about?

Bennett Sims.

At Lit Fest this summer, Tony Tulathimutte will be teaching his Advanced Weeklong Fiction Workshop: Form and Structure. Interested in working with him? Apply today!
