Often when we leave workshop, we look at our notes, think about our critiques—and then move on and never look at that piece again. The true work of workshop comes after. Writing is a process, a honing, a discipline, and that discipline is, in large part, about rewriting. About bravely looking feedback in the face and doing something with it.
In this course we’ll work on a piece we’ve workshopped before, and bring in two new drafts, which we'll then workshop again. The goal of the course is to leave with a story that has been polished enough to feel, if not done, close. We’re aiming for something that feels ready to put into the world, but also to hone those skills of taking raw material—the raw material of a first draft—and whittling, finessing, shaping, carving, and often, rewriting entirely. If you've ever left workshop and stuck something in a drawer and hoped maybe it would miraculously come out in better shape despite never touching it again, this course is for you.
Scheduling note: Class will not meet on March 24; the end date will be pushed back a week to May 12.
