4-Week: Novel Bootcamp I—Story

$240.00 Members
$265.00 Non-members

The Novel Bootcamp Series: Writing a novel or memoir can feel overwhelming, but through the Novel Bootcamp series you can get a handle on all aspects of creating a book-length manuscript. Each four-week part of the series focuses on a particular area of craft and creativity. You can take the Bootcamp parts in any order. No matter where you are in the writing process, from developing the scaffolding for a book to improving a completed draft, Novel Bootcamp is for you.

Part I: Story – In this class, we’ll work to sharpen our ideas and find the unique aspects of our projects that will set our stories apart. We’ll create rich characters, chart conflicts, develop backstories, and dig into many other aspects of craft and story. With a clear sense of who our characters are, what they want, and what they fear, we’ll understand the core drivers of our stories.

This class consists of lecture, discussion, and both in-class and at-home writing (heavily weighted toward at-home). You’ll have an opportunity to share some of your exercises in class, but this is not a workshop, and any critique is focused on a particular aspect of story and/or an element of craft.

What one participant is saying about Novel Bootcamp:

I’m grateful for all the wonderful information that Bill provides in his bootcamp classes. One of the things I really enjoyed about his teaching style is that he is so supportive of all his students no matter what genre they are writing in. Bill did a great job of distilling the complex process that goes into planning and writing a novel. I now have a huge appreciation for the amount of hard work and deep thinking that goes into novel writing. When I started the class in January, I remember thinking—hey, you just go to a coffee shop and start typing, right? I really admire how Bill showed us the complicated moving parts of a novel—setting, character, plot, subplot, arc, voice. He also used quality literature to show us how it’s done—and those examples resulted in a few mind-blowing ah-ha moments for me as to how I might approach my own story. I was honestly excited to come to class and learn about how it all works and hear what other students were working on for their novels.
