Hillary Brenhouse

Hillary Brenhouse is a Montreal-based writer and the editor and publisher of Elastic, the print magazine of psychedelic art and literature, which debuted in March 2025 with support from Harvard and UC Berkeley. She was previously the editor-in-chief of Guernica magazine and the editorial director of Bold Type Books. Much of her career in books and magazines has been focused on promoting work that challenges power and inequity via extraordinary uses of language and narrative form. Her own writing, on reproductive health and broken capitalism, has appeared in The New Yorker online, The New York Times Magazine, TIME, and the Los Angeles Review of Books, among others. 

Elastic is a new biannual magazine of psychedelic art and literature. We're looking for strange work that plays with time and space and perspective, blurs waking and dreaming life, finds absurdity and sublimity in the everyday, and otherwise breaks form as a means of arriving at states and experiences that can be impossible to describe straightforwardly or linearly. We publish poetry, essays, short fiction, and visual art of all kinds, but the goal is to, as much as possible, print pieces that blur genre lines and expand the idea of the page and the canvas.
