Geoff Van Dyke lived on the West Coast, the East Coast, and in the Midwest before settling in Denver, Colorado, almost two decades ago. Starting in 2007, he became 5280 Magazine’s articles editor before becoming its deputy editor and then editorial director. During his 12-year tenure as editorial director, 5280 won two National Magazine Awards and took home General Excellence III, the highest honor given by the City & Regional Magazine Awards, twice. He edited stories by 5280 staffers who have been anthologized in Best American Sports Writing, Best American Crime Reporting, and Best Food Writing. Van Dyke edited Mile High Stories, 5280’s collection of its longform journalism, which was published in 2018 and won the Colorado Book Award for anthologies the following year. In 2022 he launched, hosted, and produced 5280’s only podcast, Behind the Stories, until late 2024, when he left 5280 to work as a freelance writer and editor.
Van Dyke studied English as an undergraduate at the University of California, Berkeley, and holds a master’s degree from the University of Missouri School of Journalism. He was a member of the American Society of Magazine Editors’ board of directors from 2021 to 2024, and his writing has appeared in the New York Times, Outside, Men’s Journal, and other national publications.
